Farm to Cart: How We Source Our Flower
It Starts in the Soil
Every Alive & Well cartridge begins as a cannabis plant growing in Humboldt County soil. Not a greenhouse in the Central Valley. Not an indoor facility in Los Angeles. Humboldt, the Emerald Triangle, where California cannabis culture was born.
We work with a small network of farms that prioritize flavor over yield. These aren’t contract grows or commodity operations. They’re multi-generational farmers who have been selecting and breeding for terpene-rich genetics for decades.
Relationships Over Transactions
Our sourcing model is built on long-term relationships, not spot market purchasing. We’ve worked with most of our farm partners for years. That consistency gives us two advantages:
First refusal on top lots. When a farmer harvests something exceptional, we get the call before it hits the open market. This means we’re working with flower that was selected for quality, not allocated by price.
Consistency across batches. By returning to the same farmers and genetics season after season, we can maintain flavor profiles that our customers recognize. A Papaya Berry Runtz from us should taste like Papaya Berry Runtz every time.
Sun-Grown, Always
Our flower is outdoor and light-dep, sun-grown cannabis that benefits from Humboldt’s unique climate. The coastal fog, the temperature swings between day and night, the mineral-rich soil. These environmental factors create stress responses in the plant that drive terpene production.
Indoor flower can hit higher THC numbers. But for flavor complexity, nothing beats sun-grown Humboldt cannabis. That’s not nostalgia. That’s terpene science.
From Farm to Lab
Once we receive flower at our facility in Arcata, the process is hands-on:
- Inspection. Every lot is visually inspected and nose-tested before acceptance. Flower arrives already properly cured and must meet our standards before we take it in.
- Cold Storage. Accepted material is immediately stored at -100° to lock in the terpene profile and preserve freshness until extraction.
- Extraction. Single-solvent process preserving natural cannabinoid and terpene ratios.
- Fill & Package. Oil is loaded into hardware, boxed, and fully packed out for distribution.
- Testing. Per California regulations, the finished product is sent for third-party lab testing (potency, terpenes, pesticides, and residual solvents) before it can go to market.
No blending between lots. No terpene adjustment. What came out of the ground is what goes into the cart.
Supporting Small Farms
Working with small Humboldt farms isn’t just a quality decision. It’s a values decision. These are the people who built California cannabis. As the legal market consolidates around large-scale operations, supporting independent farmers keeps the culture alive.
When you buy an Alive & Well cart, you’re supporting a supply chain that starts with a farmer in the Emerald Triangle. That matters to us.
