Strain Spotlight: Tasting Notes From the Lab
Cannabis Is More Complex Than Wine
Most people don’t realize that cannabis produces some of the most unique and familiar flavor profiles through genetics alone. No added flavoring, no artificial anything. The plant does the work. We just preserve it.
Nick nose-selects every batch of input material before it enters our extraction process. If it doesn’t smell right, it doesn’t get extracted. Here are a few standout strains from recent drops and what makes each one worth trying.
Strayberries
Tasting notes: Special K cereal with dehydrated strawberries.
This one came from Santa Cruz County, where the sunshine exposure and temperature are near perfect for growing. The flower was cultivated in a mixed-light greenhouse with LED supplemental lighting. Santa Cruz is where most of California’s delicate agricultural crops thrive: berries, leafy greens, you name it. You can taste that terroir in this cart. The oil runs clear and golden, and the flavor is crisp from first pull to last.
Effect: Easy, uplifting. A daytime cart.
Strawberry Pop
Tasting notes: Strawberry ice cream. Not strawberry-adjacent. Actual strawberry ice cream.
The back of the box says it and it’s 100% accurate. This is one of the most faithful strawberry expressions we’ve ever extracted. The genetics do the heavy lifting here. No flavoring added, no distillate cut. What you taste is what the plant produced.
Effect: Smooth and mellow. Dessert-strain energy.
Gush Mintz
Tasting notes: Minty gas with a sweet finish.
This one came from High Water Farms in Holmes Flat, Humboldt County, a dry farm nestled in the redwoods near the Avenue of the Giants. The Eel River bends around the valley like a horseshoe. This is a dry farm, meaning the farmer doesn’t irrigate because nature already built the system. The soil is rich with composted river organisms and redwood-activated mycelium networks.
Every strain we’ve extracted from this farm has hit harder and tasted better than most. If the back of your box says Holmes Flat, Humboldt County, you’re holding something special.
Effect: Heavy hitter. Evening cart.
How to Read Your Cart
Every Alive & Well cartridge lists the source farm and region on the packaging. That’s intentional. We want you to start recognizing terroir the way wine drinkers recognize appellations. Same strain, different farm, different experience.
Next time you pick up a cart, check the back of the box. Then follow your nose.
